If you’re looking for presents for kiddos or parents this winter, look no further than Baby Peppers. While they may be based in Australia, where it is currently the height of summer, their ethical, eco-friendly, non-toxic items for kids are simply stunning.
Baby Peppers is a business built on returning to slow living: vintage craft, artistry and techniques such as hand block printing, basket weaving, and making organic vegetable dyes. Some of the wonderful options they carry include:
Wooden Toys handmade from sustainably sourced wood using a 200 year old turnwood art form and sourced from a fair trade artisan group based in Channapatna, Karnakata, and dyed using natural vegetable dye and natural lac, meaning that in the future they can naturally biodegrade. These toys are durable, non-toxic, and generally great for baby wellbeing.
Ethical Textiles including quilts, bedding sets, quilted blankets and dohars. The cot quilts and bedding sets are handmade in Jaipur by women who work from home in order to be flexible to their needs, and are made from organic fabrics which are hand and block printed with natural dyes. Baby Peppers also work with a small design studio run by women in Uttar Pradesh who make elephant plushies and matching quilt sets by hand. These fabrics are known as Kalamkari fabrics, and come from a fair trade artisan group in Andra Pradesh before being coloured with natural vegetable dyes
Storage Options such as baskets and tote bags that are both made from 100% recycled polyethylene and provide a lot of colour and fun. These are ethically sourced from Baladarshan, a world-renowned fair trade organisation in South India supporting female basket makers in the slums of Chennai. These women are mostly single mothers, who handweave the variety of baskets and bags that Baby Peppers sells. Buyers also learn the name of the individual who made their basket, which is written on the eco white kraft swing tag.
When it comes to getting gifts for children and families it’s easy to feel a little lost sometimes, especially if we’re also trying to make ethical and sustainable choices when we buy. Baby Peppers make incredibly beautiful items that will not only be treasured by children and parents alike, but will also stand the test of time, making them the perfect items to pass on from one generation to the next.
Until tomorrow, stay magic y’all.
