Today’s tips come in the form of an illustration from The Notepasser, a visual collection created by writer, illustrator, designer and Ethical Writers Coalition co-founder Elizabeth Stilwell. Her site is beautiful and bold and her design work is stunning, what’s not to love?

We all know bleach ain’t the greatest for healthy hair, so finding a natural way to lighten locks that’s a little less harsh isn’t exactly a bad thing. But on top of that, bleach isn’t the best for the planet (surprise surprise). Bleach is from the organochlorine family of chemicals, compounds rarely found in nature and which can take centuries to decompose, with Greenpeace calling for a complete end to organochlorine production. When mixed with waste water bleach can form chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and other compounds that are carcinogenic, and when it gets into the environment it sticks around for a long time causing trouble and environmental health issues. And then there’s this quote from a professor at the university of Leeds:

“Now, I know a lot about dyes and dye stuffs in the textile industry. We would never dream of using this on textiles… Primitive, archaic, all these things come to mind. Why do they persist on putting it on human heads?”

Basically, it’s probs just best to avoid it. Luckily Elizabeth has provided some super easy, cheap and natural alternatives below. Let me know which one works best for you!

Until next time, stay magic y’all
