It’s one week until December, and just in time for the holidays I have teamed up with Pela Case to host a very special giveaway. In the western world nearly all of us have phones, and nearly all of us have cases for those phones because we also drop them all the time. I think at this point, we’ve all been victims of a cracked screen. So to avoid smashed screendom, we end up with plasticky, future landfill cases. Let’s be real, even the ones that last forever eventually end up in the bin when we upgrade phones.

So what on earth is the case made of?

Pela uses a unique blend of plant-based biopolymers, Canadian flax straw and recycled materials to create a case that is:

• BPA-free, eco-friendly and child-safe
• 100% compostable in an industrial facility or your backyard compost
• Surprisingly smooth to the touch, sleek, flexible, and shock-resistant

Pela’s founder, Jeremy Lang, grew up in the province of Saskatchewan, which grows the most oil seed flax in the world. After the flax oil seed is harvested the flax straw often gets burned in the fields because it is too difficult to break down before the next crop is seeded. He thought there must be a way to put the straw to use and, when learning about the development of biopolymers, had the idea of incorporating flax straw fibres to provide a use for flax straw ‘waste’ while also creating an eco-friendly appearance to the material, which would help distinguish plant-based bioplastics from traditional plastic and help spread awareness about bioplastics. And so Pela’s special, eco-friendly material was born, whilst also reducing wastage of flax straw simultaneously. The best bit: as the case is made of plant and biobased materials, you can compost it when you no longer need it or send it back to Pela who will recycle it into another generation of Pela Products. NO LANDFILL!

On top of all that, these cases are genuinely gorgeous. Pela was kind enough to send me both a white and a lavender case for my Iphone 5 and boy, do they live up to their description. Surprisingly smooth is a perfect way to put it, they feel so nice in your hand without having that weird, kind of slippery plastic feel. I can’t stop touching them, is that weird? The inclusion of the straw also really does make each cases unique, and I’ve already had people ask me about them. They’re minimal and simple, but with the quirky design twist of the pentagon, which I think is great. It’s safe to say I am in love with these, I’ll never go back to any other kind of case.
